What Are They?

Dermatofibromas are very common, harmless growths, usually on the arms or legs. They often have a very distinctive red-brown color and are so hard it feels like there is a small pearl under the skin. It cannot be popped like a pimple would be, and it is not recommended that you try!

What Causes Them?

We think they are likely related to trauma or injury to the skin (bug bite, ingrown hair, etc.), and they tend to run in families. The skin actually heals “too well,” forming a dome-shaped bump. When pinched between the fingers, they often appear to “dimple” into the skin.

Common Complaints

People often complain that they shave the tops off and they are sore for a few days, and then they come back. Patients also say that they “puff up” from time to time for no reason and may be slightly tender for a while and then calm back down. They do not go away on their own.

Treatment

We usually recommend not treating these because sometimes, when you remove them, they come right back. Also, insurance will not pay for their removal since they are not cancerous, unless they meet certain criteria. It is not dangerous if you accidentally nick them when shaving: you can’t make them turn into anything dangerous.
